3 Kids on a Pear Tree

E2, J2, & G on pear tree

The downed branch was used hard last week. As you can see all 3 of them got some quality time in it.

Saturday morning Kevin drug Gordy’s skinny butt outside at 7:00 am for tree removal duty. Kevin worked the chainsaw and Gordy ran the chipper. They worked for 5 solid hours in the nasty heat. Gordy’s back looked like Mike Meyer’s in the Austin Power’s flicks it was so covered in chipping debris. Kevin said Gordon’s help was invaluable. The chainsaw quit with about 15′ of branch left, so there is still more, but Kevin will be able to handle that. I think the little dogwood was spared–we shall see.

Douglas County Fair

The Douglas County Fair was this week. We took the kids after Mass on Saturday and ate corn-dogs and snow cones for dinner. There was a petting zoo, pony rides, chickens, rabbits, swine, goats, and many other animals to see and smell. Oh yeah, and rides. I was amazed at the ticket prices, so we didn’t do too many, but they seemed to enjoy them all.

We finally finished this up a week or so ago. I know we started on it before Easter in 2007. Pretty sad I know. I have put several more photos, both before and after on flickr. No I haven’t figured out how to work WordPress very well, so most of my posts and going to be one photo posts.

Basically, all we did is paint and add an over the toilet cabinet and blinds. I painted the linoleum floor. I am not totally pleased with it. It really shows off all the crud that accumulates, but it is better that the other. Cheap temporary fix.

School Clothes!!

Erina nd Jack try on new uniforms.

Erin and Jack will both be at St. John’s this fall. Erin in kindergarten and Jack in the preschool ( although Jack only has to conform on top). We got a box of khaki clothes from Old Navy last week and there was a flurry of trying on clothes. Erin got several pairs of knee socks that at pretty silly. Jack is totally ticked that I will not let him wear his new school shoes until preschool starts.

School starts on the 25th of August for the little ones and the week before for the big ones. I can’t hardly wait!

Noticed the debris from my bathroom window this morning. Kevin insists it wasn’t there when he rose for work.

The base of this branch is at least a foot in diameter. It looks like a couple of evenings work. I am just glad I wasn’t weeding there this morning as was my plan!

Not much blooming here yet. Things are pretty small still. Some of Dad’s first shipment of daylillies are in this area. All of them have greened up nicely and put out some new leaves. There is creeping phlox, ‘Blue Rug’ juniper, drawf crimson barberry, portulaca, sedum, and coral bells in this shot. You can see the peas and brassicas in the background.

Finally a new post. Gordy’s ninth grade formal was last week. I think he had a great time. The gal he went with was “just a friend”. Look in the flickr badge and there are more shots of them. The group shots were taken at one of the girls houses and posted on Facebook somewhere. Emily forund them and downloaded them.

If you havn’t seen Zoolander you just won’t understand the face.

We attended two art shows in the last week. Erin’s preschool had their annual exhibition yesterday. Erin is standing near her untitled work–the larger one with the yellow paper in back.

Kevin and I attend the art auction on Saturday night and bought a watercolor by Hobart Jackson. Kevin took a class his freshman year at KU from Jackson. We haven’t decided where to hang it yet, but it will probably be in the dining room.

Note to Mom–you would really like it! She’s your type.

First mowing of the spring

Kevin made sure the tractor and push mower were good to go last weekend and took the tractor out for a spin on Sunday. Jack sat with him most of the time and even took a little nap while riding.

As you can see everything is greening up. I planted seeds a few weeks ago and noticed the little pea shoots making their way above ground yesterday. The beds I worked on were much easier to get plantable this year. We are not going to till at all this year in the garden. We will just add compost to the top and work it in as we go. There are still several beds that need alot of work soon. Hopefully I can get Kevin out again this weekend to help with some heavy lifting.

Are food prices scaring anyone else? Nothing but bad news out there. I know it is causing all sorts of problems with the food service industry.
